Bathroom Remodel Cost Breakdown

The cost of a bathroom remodel can vary widely depending upon the size of your space, the areas you would like to change, the type of work performed, and the materials you choose. Prices can range from $2000 to greater than $50,000.

Bathroom remodels can include replacing cabinetry, countertops, plumbing, fixtures, flooring, walls, doors, lighting, and wet space (tub/shower). Many people look to change their wet space and update it to a more contemporary and easier to clean system. There are several options to update your bathroom, such as tub/shower refinishing/glazing, a bath insert, a new tile or natural stone tub/shower, and a complete bathroom remodel, and there are advantages and disadvantages to each.

Tub glazing/refinishing is a relatively inexpensive way to cover that old color with a brighter, more modern color.
Typical cost averages $2000-$3000. However, this process is highly caustic, requiring workers to wear full hazmat suits and for homeowners to vacate the premise for at least one day. Additionally, the process typically lasts only 1-3 years before it begins to chip, and you see that old color underneath.

Bath liners are another popular option. These standardized inserts fit directly over your existing tub, so no demolition is required, and there are no harsh chemicals used. While more expensive than bathtub refinishing, bath liners are moderately priced at $7000-$10,000. There is no grout to maintain, and the tub is ready for immediate use. Despite these benefits, bath liners do not address any underlying issues such as leaky pipes or mold growth. They cover your tub, but they also cover your existing problems instead of addressing them. In addition, water may get trapped under the liner creating a bubble type of effect, and the floor may flex. This can create a hidden mold issue between the tub and liner. Lastly, the size of the bathtub is reduced, which may be an issue if you enjoy bathing.

A full remodel of the wet space entails a complete tear-out of your existing tub. If there are any pre-existing issues, your installer will be able to identify them and fix them. It also allows you greater design freedom with selecting your own tile or natural stone. The cost of this is significantly more and can range from $20,000-$30,000. Disadvantages with this option also include porous grout is used to set the tile or stone, and this creates an environment for mold and mildew to easily grow. Abrasive chemicals are required to clean porous grout. Furthermore, demolition can take 1-2 weeks, leaving you without use of your bathroom for an extended period. Complete bathroom remodels including wet space, cabinetry, countertops, flooring, lighting, etc. can cost even more. These bathroom remodel costs range from $30,000 to over $50,000 and can take several weeks to complete.
