Why You Should Shrink-Wrap Your Leaking Roof

Traditionally, people have used blue roof tarps to protect their roof after damage from storms and natural disasters or if they’re having construction delays on a roof installation. Blue roof tarps provide some protection from water leaks, but they have drawbacks. A more effective solution is to shrink-wrap your leaking roof.

Drawbacks of Blue Tarps

You may be wondering why you shouldn’t use a blue roof tarp. Blue roof tarps are typically secured by nails or screws, creating more holes in your roof, or they’re held down with sandbags, which aren’t as stable or watertight.

If the tarp isn’t installed perfectly smooth, water can seep in, further damaging your roof and the interior of your home. This can require costly water damage restoration. Poor seals may also hold pockets of standing water, creating a breeding ground for mold.

Although blue tarps are generally rated as UV-resistant, it’s only for a short period of time. After a while, this material will degrade under the sun’s UV rays and start to shred apart.

Plus, blue tarps are not “breathable,” and sun exposure can create drastic temperature changes under the tarp, further damaging shingles and causing them to crack, allowing for more water seepage and creating the potential for further structural damage.

Shrink Wrap for Your Roof

A more effective solution to protect your property is to shrink-wrap your roof. Similar to how food is sealed with shrink wrap to better protect it and increase its shelf life, shrink-wrapping a leaking roof will better seal it, protect it from the elements, and reduce the chances of further structural damage.

Roof shrink wrap is a durable plastic membrane heat-sealed to conform to the contours of your house, providing a tighter seal against water. It’s designed to float slightly above the roof surface, providing necessary ventilation to prevent drastic temperature changes that could crack shingles.

Roof wrap also provides UV protection from the sun’s harmful rays for several months for a longer-term solution. It’s also slip-resistant and can be opened and easily reattached for roof inspections. Lastly, form-fitted shrink wrap has greater curb appeal than unsightly, loose-fitting blue tarps.

Roof wrapping can be applied to residential and commercial roofs and on various roof types, including asphalt shingle, tile, metal, and flat roofs. Typical reasons to shrink-wrap your roof include:

  • If your roof has been damaged by a natural disaster (hurricane, tornado, hailstorm, windstorm, etc.)
  • If your roof has been damaged and is awaiting inspection
  • If there’s a construction delay and you need to protect it until construction resumes
